Spring 2 Update

It is hard to believe that the first half of the Spring term has come to an end and that Spectacled Bears are now halfway through Year 1! They continue to impress us each day with their hard work, creativity, collaborative skills and resilience when learning new concepts.

In English, we have delved into the realm of traditional tales. The children wrote a play-script for Little Red Riding Hood, alternative endings to The Gingerbread Man and rewrote The Little Red Hen. We also had a lot of fun making rainbow kebabs - following the instructions that we wrote earlier in the week! We have covered a few important spelling and grammar concepts this term too - including imperative (bossy) verbs, adverbs, spelling the days of the week, using inverted commas to show speech, and using capital letters for proper nouns.

In Maths, we have looked at measuring mass using balance scales and have begun to discuss measuring mass in kilograms, continuing to develop multiplication and division skills by counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. There have been lots of opportunities for rehearsal using practical resources whilst covering these concepts.

In Science, the children have continued to develop their understanding of the materials used around us and begun to understand the properties of those materials. They have been rehearsing their use of scientific vocabulary such as hard, rigid, transparent, opaque, and waterproof.  In Geography, the children enjoyed comparing Godalming with Tokyo in Japan! Look at some of the fantastic posters created about Japan, containing some of the physical and human features of Japan.

We have been amazed by the fantastic art work produced in Spectacled Bears this term. Here are some of the brilliant sunflowers that were painted by our young artists!
